Warning sign for uninsured drivers, emphasizing the importance of having insurance - Sharks at Law

Uninsured motorists are more common than you think. According to a 2016 study, 13.7% of Illinois drivers, or about 1 in 8, were uninsured, ranking the state 18th for most uninsured motorists. Not only are uninsured motorists a threat to you, they are also a threat to themselves. Being involved in an accident without insurance is a huge cost for both parties. Not to mention, it is illegal to drive uninsured.

Having uninsured motorist (UM) coverage on your insurance policy is necessary to ensure your physical and financial safety on the road. UM coverage will cover your costs if you are involved in an accident and the other party does not have insurance. It will also cover your costs if you do not know who you were in a crash with, or you were involved in a hit and run.

Underinsured motorist (UIM) is another important form of insurance to consider. This type of policy protects you when you are involved in an accident and the other party has very minimal coverage. UIM will cover you if the damages are more than the other party’s insurance can cover.

It is recommended that all motorists UM and UIM policies to their insurance if they haven’t already to protect themselves on the road. For just a few extra dollars per month, you can ensure that you will be covered no matter what type of car accident you are involved in.

Being involved in a car accident is a large stress for everyone involved. If you or a loved one has recently been involved in a wreck, it is important to reach out to your attorney to know what steps you should take, especially if the other party is uninsured.
